Here are the Top 10 objections to biblical Christianity encountered while witnessing in Cincinnati.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15 |
Objection #1: “The bible was written by men.”
Quick Response: “How about the 10 commandments? They were written in God’s own hand on two stone tablets that were given to Moses. Have you kept the 10 commandments?”
Alternate Response: “Do you have any books at home? Were those books written by men? How do you know those books are true? ”
Objection #2: “I am going to heaven because I have prayed to God for forgiveness.”
Response: “Is that all you need to do? Let’s try that approach out in a court of law. Tell the judge that you are really sorry for stealing a car and you wish to be forgiven. He will tell you that you still have to pay a price for stealing the car.
The issue is justice and the God of the universe is a righteous judge. You have to do more than pray for forgiveness. Justice requires some type of payment for your crime. Do you know anyone who will pay the price for your crimes on the day of judgment?”
Objection #3: “I think I am going to heaven because I am a good person.”
Quick Response: “Let’s do a quick test to see if that is true. Have you ever told a lie?”
Alternate Response: “By my standard you probably are a good person. But God’s standard is different than your standard or my standard, agreed? Let’s do a quick test to see if you are a good person by God’s standard. Have you ever told a lie?”
Objection #4: “I think I am going to heaven because I have not done anything really bad.”
Quick Response: “So you have not done anything really bad by your standard. You have not murdered anyone or been convicted of a major crime. But God’s standard may be different than your standard, agreed? God’s standard is the 10 commandments. Let’s do a little test and see if you have broken God’s laws.”
Objection #5: “I believe this is heaven and hell.”
Quick Response: “Really, I am looking around and this looks pretty nice: good weather today, tasty food, a comfortable place to sleep. I don’t think this is hell. But the question is, what happens to your soul after you die? Do you think there is a heaven and a hell after you die?”
Objection #6: “I don’t know what happens after you die.”
Response: “You are not going to die tonight are you? Good. Then I guess you don’t need to know today. But wait, you really don’t know when you are going to die. So let me ask you a few questions to see if you will go to heaven or hell.”
Objection #7: “Nobody knows what happens after you die.”
Response: “How do you know that? How do you know that nobody knows what happens after you die? You can’t know what everyone knows. Is it possible that others might know something that you might not know? Millions of people celebrate Easter so let’s talk about Easter for a minute.”
Objection #8: “I think I have done more good than bad so I am probably going to heaven.”
Response: “Try that in a court of law. Tell the judge, ‘I stole that car but I help people all the time. Judge, I have done more good than bad.’ What is the judge going to say? The judge will hold you responsible for your crimes. The issue is justice and God is a just judge.”
Objection #9: “I have not seen any convincing evidence for anything after you die.”
Response: “But it could be true, right? It is possible that you could not be convinced of the evidence, but it could still be true. Others could have evidence that there is something after you die. When you were growing up, did your family ever celebrate Easter?”
Objection #10: “I have not broken any of the 10 commandments.”
Response: “Do you believe people should take responsibility for their actions? The bible says, ‘All have sinned.’ Let me ask you again: Have you ever told a lie?”
