Here is the One Tip You Need to Develop the Spiritual Discipline of Evangelism

Develop the Spiritual Discipline of Evangelism

Here is the one tip you need to develop the spiritual discipline of evangelism …

Discipline yourself to be with unbelievers.

Donald S. Whitney is the expert on Spiritual Disciplines. He wrote Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. Donald has been Professor of Biblical Spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY since 2005. If Dr. Albert Mohler were to give a gift box to your church, Professor Whitney’s book might be in the box.

And according to Donald S. Whitney, a number of spiritual disciplines are commended in scripture. They include bible intake, prayer, worship, evangelism, service, stewardship, and more.

We practice these disciplines because we want to become more Godly. And we want to conform our lives to become more like Christ. But, according to Donald Whitney, spiritual disciplines need to be developed.

Think about it. Athletes develop through discipline. Musicians develop through discipline. And Christians need to develop their evangelistic gifts through discipline before they bear fruit.

Whitney accepts no excuses from Christians who don’t share Christ. Many Christians say, “I don’t have time to evangelize.” Whitney responds, “Do we really want to say that we are too busy to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to make disciples?”

Many claim that they don’t have the spiritual gift of evangelism. Whitney responds that God may gift SOME for evangelism. But he expects ALL believers to evangelize.

Tips to Develop the Spiritual Discipline of Evangelism

Here are few supporting tips from Evangelize Cincinnati to help you develop the spiritual discipline of evangelism:

  • Find a regular evangelism “fishing hole.” We like the Greyhound Bus Station and the local abortion clinic. You may prefer your local university.
  • Put it on your schedule. Again, here’s our schedule. Join us when you can.
  • Get comfortable with a couple conversation openers. They take the pressure off you:
    • Try the optical illusion gospel track.
    • Use a book of names. You can tell people the spiritual meaning of their first name.
  • Learn the Good Person Test from Living Waters.
  • Pray. Your prayer life will be enriched as a result of the encounters that you have. Even if you can not join, perhaps you will pray. The great evangelist Charles Spurgeon was asked why he was successful in evangelism. He said, “Because my people pray for me.”

“I believe we can find long term solutions to our inconsistency and frequent lack of witnessing if we will discipline ourselves for evangelism. ”

September 8, 2016 by Dave Leave a Comment

namebook

This video shows how to use a book of names to open a Christian evangelism encounter.

People love to learn about the meaning of their name. Most names have a spiritual connotation. Each name in the book contains a bridge to spiritual matters.

The Name Book by Dorothy Astoria is available for about $10 on Amazon.

New Pew Research Data: 77% Ohioans Believe in Heaven

November 10, 2015 by Dave Leave a Comment

bible-879084_1920

According to the new Pew Research data, 77% of Ohioans believe in Heaven. This is good news for biblical Christians. We just need to ask friends and strangers, “On what basis will God let you into Heaven?”

77% is a BIG number. By comparison, only 51% of Ohioans identify as Ohio State fans. And only 59% of Ohioans have a positive view of LeBron James according to a June 2015 Public Policy Poll. Ohio State and LeBron James may have had good years recently but Ohioans are counting on heaven.

Because 77% of Ohioans believe in Heaven, you can share Christ confidently. Here’s why… you read your bible. You know what Jesus of Nazareth taught:

1.     Most people are not going to Heaven. Matthew 7:13-14

2.     Many Christians in name only are not getting in. Jesus Christ will say to them, “I never knew you.” Matthew 7:21-23

3.     Only true believers go to Heaven. They trust in Christ’s alone for their salvation. They know they are saved by faith not works (Ephesians 2:8-9). They follow Jesus and His teachings. They repent and believe. They die to self and transform their lives. They are born again (John 3:3).

Since you believe in Heaven … and 77% of Ohioans believe in Heaven, you can ask this revealing question:

“On what basis will God let you into Heaven?”

Most people will say they are a “good person.” Some will say that they have not done anything “really bad.” Whatever they say, you have identified their justification before a Holy God.

Unless the person mentions Christ’s finished work on the cross, their justification is not biblical. You can give them the “Good Person” Test. It is based on the 10 Commandments and it will expose their sinfulness before God. It opens the door for you to share the good news of the Gospel.

Summary:

77% of Ohioans believe in Heaven.

You can open an evangelism encounter by asking:

“On what basis will God let you into Heaven?”
